Pedal your way along one of New Zealand's most spectacular coastal routes, where the rugged Kaikoura Ranges tumble into the Pacific and the sea air is laced with the promise of marine encounters. The Kaikoura Coastal Ride is a 40-kilometre stretch of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail that hugs the shoreline, offering front-row seats to seal colonies, seabird colonies, and, with luck, migrating whales spouting offshore. The ride is mostly flat and sealed, making it accessible for casual cyclists and families, though the coastal winds can keep things interesting.
Highlights & What to See
- Seal Coast Highway – The ride parallels State Highway 1 but feels worlds away. Watch for New Zealand fur seals lounging on rocks just metres from the path, especially between Kaikoura and the Ohau Point seal colony.
- Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway – Detour onto this clifftop trail for sweeping views of the peninsula and the chance to spot seals, dolphins, and seabirds from above.
- Fyffe House – A historic whaler's cottage built on whalebone foundations, offering a glimpse into Kaikoura's whaling past. It's a short detour from the ride near the southern end.
- Point Kean Viewpoint – A popular stop where you can watch seals jostle for space on the rocks and, in winter, see snow-capped mountains across the bay.
- Kaikoura Wharf – The ride passes the working wharf, where you can often spot fishing boats unloading their catch and, in season, whale-watching tours departing.
Suggested Time to Spend
The full 40-kilometre out-and-back ride from Kaikoura township to the Hapuku River and back takes about 3–4 hours, including stops for photos and seal-spotting. If you're short on time, a 2-hour ride from town to the Point Kean seal colony and back covers the most scenic stretch. Most people dedicate a half-day to this ride, combining it with a whale-watching tour or a walk on the peninsula. The ride is best in the morning when the winds are lighter and the light is golden.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Whale Watching – Kaikoura is world-famous for sperm whale sightings year-round; tours depart from the town centre.
- Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway – A 3-hour coastal walk with dramatic cliffs, seal colonies, and seabird colonies; easily combined with the ride.
- Ohau Point Seal Colony – A short drive north of town, this is the best spot to see seal pups in summer.
- Kaikoura Ranges – For hikers, trails like the Mount Fyffe Track offer panoramic views of the peninsula and ocean.
- Mangamaunu Bay – A beautiful, less-visited beach just north of town, perfect for a picnic after your ride.
