Kaikoura Coastal Ride

Pedal your way along one of New Zealand's most spectacular coastal routes, where the rugged Kaikoura Ranges tumble into the Pacific and the sea air is laced with the promise of marine encounters. The Kaikoura Coastal Ride is a 40-kilometre stretch of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail that hugs the shoreline, offering front-row seats to seal colonies, seabird colonies, and, with luck, migrating whales spouting offshore. The ride is mostly flat and sealed, making it accessible for casual cyclists and families, though the coastal winds can keep things interesting.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

The full 40-kilometre out-and-back ride from Kaikoura township to the Hapuku River and back takes about 3–4 hours, including stops for photos and seal-spotting. If you're short on time, a 2-hour ride from town to the Point Kean seal colony and back covers the most scenic stretch. Most people dedicate a half-day to this ride, combining it with a whale-watching tour or a walk on the peninsula. The ride is best in the morning when the winds are lighter and the light is golden.
