Glenorchy

Glenorchy, a tiny settlement at the head of Lake Wakatipu, is the gateway to some of New Zealand's most spectacular wilderness. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and ancient beech forests, this is where the road ends and the real adventure begins. It's a place of raw, untamed beauty, famously serving as a backdrop for scenes from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Glenorchy can be appreciated in a half-day from Queenstown, but to truly soak in the atmosphere and do a short walk or horse trek, allocate a full day. If you're tackling the Routeburn or Greenstone tracks, plan for 2–5 days. Most visitors find that a day trip is enough for the highlights, but overnighters are rewarded with quieter moments.
