Arthur's Pass National Park is a rugged alpine wonderland straddling the Southern Alps, where ancient beech forests cling to steep valleys and snow-capped peaks pierce the sky. This is New Zealand's wild heart, a place where kea parrots cheekily investigate your car and the roar of waterfalls fills the air. Whether you're a seasoned tramper or a day-tripper, the park offers an authentic taste of the South Island's untamed beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Arthur's Pass Village – The park's hub, with a visitor centre, basic accommodation, and the start of many walks. Keep an eye out for kea, the world's only alpine parrot.
- Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall – A short, steep walk leads to a viewing platform where you can feel the spray from this 131-metre cascade.
- Temple Basin – A challenging but rewarding day hike offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.
- Otira Viaduct Lookout – A short walk to a viewpoint over the dramatic Otira Gorge and the viaduct that carries the road across it.
- Avalanche Peak – For experienced hikers, this summit climb provides incredible 360-degree views of the park.
- TranzAlpine Scenic Train – Even if you're not hiking, the train journey through the park from Christchurch to Greymouth is a world-class experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least one full day to soak in the highlights. If you're short on time, a half-day stop allows you to walk to Devil's Punchbowl and explore the village. For hikers, two to three days open up longer trails like the Avalanche Peak climb or the multi-day Mingha-Deception route. The park is a popular stop on the drive between Christchurch and the West Coast, so many travellers combine it with a night in the village.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
