Rising dramatically from the Heretaunga Plains, Te Mata Peak is a limestone ridge that offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Hawke's Bay. According to Māori legend, the peak is the body of the giant Te Mata, who fell in love with a chief's daughter and met his demise while trying to prove himself. Today, it's a beloved spot for hikers, mountain bikers, and anyone craving a bird's-eye view of the region's patchwork of vineyards, orchards, and the glittering Pacific Ocean.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can easily spend a couple of hours exploring the summit and walking a short trail, but if you're keen on a longer hike or mountain bike ride, allocate half a day. The drive to the summit car park is quick from Hastings or Havelock North, making it a great morning or late-afternoon outing. For the best light and fewer crowds, aim for early morning or late afternoon.
