Rising dramatically from the Heretaunga Plains, Te Mata Peak is a limestone ridge that offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Hawke's Bay. According to Māori legend, the peak is the body of the giant Te Mata, who fell in love with a chief's daughter and met his demise while trying to prove himself. Today, it's a beloved spot for hikers, mountain bikers, and anyone craving a bird's-eye view of the region's patchwork of vineyards, orchards, and the glittering Pacific Ocean.
Highlights & What to See
