Wanaka Tree

Lone, gnarled and impossibly photogenic, the Wanaka Tree is arguably New Zealand's most famous willow. This solitary tree grows from the clear, shallow waters of Lake Wānaka, with the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps rising behind it. It’s a symbol of resilience and a must-see for any traveller passing through the Otago region. The best light for that iconic shot is at sunrise or sunset, when the sky blazes and the lake is glassy.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 30–60 minutes to visit the tree itself, including a walk from town and time to compose your photos. If you’re doing the full lakefront walk and stopping at cafés, allow 2–3 hours. Most visitors combine it with a morning or afternoon in Wānaka town, making it a half-day stop on a road trip between Queenstown and the West Coast.
