Waipara Wine Trail
Just a 45-minute drive north of Christchurch, the Waipara Wine Trail unfurls across a sun-drenched valley that has fast become one of New Zealand's most exciting wine regions. The dry, warm climate and limestone-rich soils produce exceptional Pinot Noir, Riesling, and aromatic whites, with many cellar doors offering tastings in stunning settings. This is a relaxed, gourmet escape perfect for oenophiles and anyone who enjoys pairing great wine with local produce and spectacular landscapes.

Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a leisurely half-day to a full day to explore the Waipara Wine Trail. Most cellar doors are open from late morning to late afternoon, so start around 10am and take your time driving between the dozen or so wineries. If you want to linger over lunch at a winery restaurant, allow at least two hours for that stop. A full day lets you visit 5–7 wineries without feeling rushed, and you can easily combine it with a visit to the nearby Hanmer Springs thermal pools for a perfect North Canterbury day.
