Just a 20-minute drive south of Hanmer Springs, the Waipara Valley unfurls as one of New Zealand's most exciting wine regions, celebrated for its exceptional Pinot Noir, Riesling, and aromatic whites. The valley's unique microclimate — warm, dry summers tempered by cool coastal breezes — produces grapes with intense flavour and elegance. This is a laid-back, unpretentious wine destination where you can cycle between cellar doors, picnic among vines, and chat directly with winemakers who are passionate about their craft.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full day to do the region justice. Most visitors spend 4–6 hours visiting 3–4 wineries, with a leisurely lunch at one of the vineyard restaurants. If you're based in Hanmer Springs, you can easily combine a morning of wine tasting with an afternoon soak in the thermal pools. Alternatively, allocate a half-day if you're passing through on the way to or from Christchurch.
