Waipara Springs might not have the flashy reputation of its northern neighbour Hanmer Springs, but this intimate thermal pool complex offers a delightfully local, unhurried soak experience. Tucked among vineyards and limestone outcrops in North Canterbury, it feels more like a private backyard retreat than a commercial attraction. The naturally heated mineral water (a constant 39°C) feeds two main pools and a smaller spa pool, all set in a grassy garden with mountain views. It’s the kind of place where you can float under the stars, listen to the bellbirds, and feel the day’s driving tension melt away.
Highlights & What to See
- The Thermal Pools: Soak in the main 39°C pool, the slightly cooler 36°C lap pool, or the private spa pool. The mineral-rich water is said to soothe muscles and calm the mind.
- Vineyard & Winery Tastings: On-site Waipara Springs Winery offers tastings of its award-winning Pinot Noir and Riesling – perfect for a post-soak sip on the terrace.
- Heritage Garden & Cottages: Stroll through the historic grounds, with century-old trees and original stone cottages that give the place a storybook feel.
- Picnic & BBQ Areas: Bring your own lunch and fire up a free BBQ; the setting is ideal for a relaxed afternoon with friends or family.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three hours is ample for a thorough soak and a wander through the grounds. If you add a wine tasting and a picnic, plan for a leisurely half-day. The pools are open until 8pm (later in summer), making it a lovely stop late in the afternoon after exploring the Waipara Valley wine region.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Christchurch: The garden city is an hour south – combine with a stop at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens or a punt on the Avon.
- Kaikōura: Drive 90 minutes north for whale watching, dolphin encounters, and the famous crayfish.
- Lewis Pass & Maruia Springs: Continue inland for more hot pools and alpine scenery – a classic New Zealand road trip.
