Treble Cone is a skier's mountain, pure and simple. Perched above Lake Wanaka in the Southern Alps, this South Island resort delivers the steepest, longest runs in New Zealand, with a raw, alpine feel that sets it apart from more manicured fields. If you crave wide-open bowls, chutes, and untracked powder, Treble Cone is your holy grail. The views alone—across the lake to the peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park—are worth the ride up.
Highlights & What to See
- Steep terrain & deep snow: Treble Cone is famous for its challenging advanced runs, especially the Motatapu Chutes and the Saddle Basin, where the snow stays good for days after a dump.
- Lake Wanaka views: The summit offers jaw-dropping panoramas of the lake and the Southern Alps—bring a camera for the chairlift ride.
- Beginners and intermediates welcome, too: While it's known for expert terrain, there are wide cruisers like the Home Basin runs and a dedicated learning area at the base.
- Heli-skiing access: From the top of the Saddle Basin, you can connect to heli-ski operations for untracked backcountry lines.
- Small crowds: Compared to nearby resorts, Treble Cone feels less crowded, especially midweek—more powder for you.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan a full day—Treble Cone is a destination, not a quick stop. The drive from Wanaka takes about 35 minutes up a winding gravel road; give yourself an extra hour if it's snowing. Arrive early (by 9am) to snag parking and first tracks. If you're a strong skier, you'll want to explore both basins; a day is barely enough. Non-skiers might be better off in Wanaka, as there's no village at the base—just a café and rental shop.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Mount Aspiring National Park – Just beyond Wanaka, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers hiking, glacier walks, and stunning alpine scenery year-round.
