Treble Cone is the South Island’s largest ski area, renowned for its long, groomed cruisers, steep chutes, and jaw-dropping views of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps. The field’s high altitude (up to 2,088 m) ensures reliable snow, while its uncrowded slopes and advanced terrain appeal to experienced skiers and boarders. Beginners aren’t forgotten – there’s a dedicated learning area – but the real draw is the expansive, challenging runs that make Treble Cone a bucket-list destination for powder hounds.
Highlights & What to See
- Home Basin: Wide, groomed runs with stunning lake views – perfect for warm-up laps and intermediate cruising.
- Saddle Basin: Advanced-only terrain accessed via a short hike or the Saddle Chair; features steep chutes, rock gardens, and some of the best off-piste in New Zealand.
- Motatapu Chutes: Legendary expert lines that drop into the Motatapu Valley – only for those with strong off-piste skills.
- Treble Cone Base Lodge: A sun-drenched deck for lunch with panoramic views; grab a coffee or a beer and soak in the scenery.
- Lake Wānaka Vista: From the summit, the view over the lake and surrounding peaks is simply unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day – the drive from Wānaka takes about 35 minutes, and the terrain is vast enough to keep you busy from the 9am first lift to the 4pm close. If you’re staying in Wānaka, consider two days: one to explore Home Basin and the other to tackle Saddle Basin. Treble Cone doesn’t offer on-mountain accommodation, so plan to return to Wānaka each evening.
