Few train journeys on Earth rival the Tranz Alpine, a four-and-a-half-hour odyssey that slices through the backbone of New Zealand's South Island. From Christchurch, you'll climb from the Canterbury Plains into the Southern Alps, passing through deep river gorges, past braided rivers and golden tussock hills, before cresting the Main Divide at Arthur's Pass. The carriages are comfortable with panoramic windows and an open-air viewing carriage, making this an essential experience for anyone who loves epic scenery from a seat.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day for the round trip from Christchurch (the train departs early morning and returns late afternoon). If you're based in Hanmer Springs, drive to Christchurch (1.5 hours) and park at the station. For a more relaxed pace, consider doing the journey one-way and staying overnight in Greymouth or Hokitika, then returning by bus or rental car. The train runs daily year-round, but book ahead in peak season.
