Perched on the rugged Banks Peninsula just a short drive from Christchurch, Taylors Mistake is a wild, windswept bay that feels a world away from the city. Named after a 19th-century shipwreck, this secluded beach is framed by dramatic volcanic cliffs, turquoise waters, and a laid-back vibe that attracts surfers, walkers, and day-trippers. The gravel road descent adds to the sense of discovery — you're rewarded with a pristine crescent of sand, a handful of baches (holiday homes), and some of the best coastal walks in the region.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

A half-day is ideal: spend a couple of hours walking the Godley Head loop (3–4 hours return if you go all the way) and then relax on the beach with a picnic. If you're keen to surf, allow for a full morning or afternoon depending on the tide. The road is unsealed and narrow, so factor in extra driving time from Christchurch (about 45 minutes).
