Taupo, a vibrant town on the shores of New Zealand's largest lake, is a geothermal wonderland and adventure hub. The air carries a faint whiff of sulphur, a constant reminder of the volcanic forces simmering beneath. With the mighty Tongariro River carving through the landscape and the lake's crystal-clear waters stretching to the horizon, Taupo offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and adrenaline-pumping activities.
Highlights & What to See
- Huka Falls: A short walk leads to this thundering cascade where 220,000 litres of water per second surge through a narrow chasm. The electric blue water is mesmerising, and you can also jet-boat right up to the base for a soaking thrill.
- Lake Taupo: The lake itself is a playground for kayaking, sailing, and scenic cruises. The Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay, accessible only by water, are a must-see. Hire a kayak or join a boat tour to get up close to these striking figures.
- Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Often described as New Zealand's best day hike, this 19.4 km trek across volcanic terrain passes emerald lakes, steam vents, and craters. It's challenging but rewards with otherworldly landscapes. Book a shuttle from Taupo for early-morning pick-up.
- Craters of the Moon: A surreal geothermal walk through steaming craters and bubbling mud pools. The lunar-like landscape feels like stepping onto another planet, and the boardwalk makes it easily accessible.
- Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs: After a day of hiking or biking, soak in these naturally heated pools. The sulphur-free mineral water is perfect for soothing tired muscles, and there's a family-friendly area with slides.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two full days to Taupo. One day for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (allow 7-8 hours including travel) and another for lake activities, Huka Falls, and geothermal sights. If you have a third day, explore the nearby vineyards or take a scenic flight over Mount Ruapehu. For a relaxed pace, three days let you enjoy everything without rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Waitomo Caves: Famous for glowworm displays and black-water rafting. A 2-hour drive north, easily combined with Taupo on a loop from Rotorua.
- Rotorua: Geothermal parks, Maori culture, and the Redwoods Forest. 1 hour north, ideal for a day trip or overnight.
- Tongariro National Park: Beyond the crossing, the park offers shorter walks like the Tama Lakes track and ski fields in winter. 1 hour south.
- Lake Rotoaira: A quieter lake with trout fishing and kayaking, just south of Turangi. 30 minutes south of Taupo.
- Napier: Art Deco architecture and wineries on the coast. 2 hours east, a scenic drive through the Napier-Taupo Road.
