Southern Scenic Route
The Southern Scenic Route is a spectacular 600-kilometre driving loop that winds through some of New Zealand's most diverse and dramatic landscapes, from the rugged Catlins coast to the pristine lakes of Fiordland. This is not a route to rush — it's a journey of slow travel, where every bend reveals a new vista of dense native forest, windswept beaches, and remote settlements. As you drive, you'll feel the rhythm of the South Island's wild southern edge.
Highlights & What to See
- Catlins Coast – Explore the stunning Cathedral Caves, McLean Falls, and the famous petrified forest at Curio Bay. Keep an eye out for Hector's dolphins and yellow-eyed penguins.
- Nugget Point – A dramatic headland with a historic lighthouse and colonies of fur seals and sea lions. The short walk to the viewpoint is a must.
- The Lost Gypsy Gallery – A quirky, whimsical museum and workshop in Papatowai, filled with interactive contraptions and art.
- Te Anau & Fiordland – The route ends near Te Anau, gateway to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. Take a cruise or kayak to experience the fiords' sheer cliffs and waterfalls.
- Invercargill & Bluff – Stop in Invercargill for its art deco architecture and visit Bluff, famous for its oysters and the signpost at Stirling Point.
- Riverton & The Southern Scenic Route's Beaches – Riverton's long sandy beaches and the historic Rocks Highway offer great photo opportunities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 3–5 days to drive the full loop from Dunedin or Invercargill. The route is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace, with overnight stops in the Catlins (e.g., Owaka or Papatowai) and Te Anau. If you're short on time, the Catlins section alone makes a rewarding 1–2 day detour.
