Perched high above the turquoise waters of Lake Wanaka, Sealy Tarns is a classic alpine tramp that rewards hikers with one of New Zealand's most iconic mirror-image reflections. The steep but well-graded track climbs through beech forest and tussock to a series of small tarns that, on a calm day, perfectly reflect the jagged peaks of the Southern Alps. It's a quintessential Wanaka experience that combines physical challenge with breathtaking scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- The Tarns – The main attraction: a chain of shallow alpine lakes that, on windless mornings, create flawless reflections of Mount Aspiring and the surrounding peaks.
- Panoramic Views – From the tarns, gaze down at Lake Wanaka and across to the Roy's Peak ridge; the vista stretches from the glacier-carved Matukituki Valley to the distant peaks of the Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Alpine Flora – In spring and summer, the track is dotted with mountain daisies, hebes, and the delicate white flowers of the mountain snowberry.
- Birdlife – Keep an eye out for kea (mountain parrots) and the cheerful chirp of the South Island robin in the lower forest sections.
- Sunrise or Sunset – For photographers, the golden hours cast long shadows and paint the mountains in alpenglow, making the tarns shimmer with colour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers take 3–4 hours return, including time for photos and a snack at the tarns. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to catch the calmest conditions for reflections. The track is steep (about 600 metres of elevation gain) and should be considered a half-day activity. Fit hikers can combine it with a morning walk and then explore Wanaka township in the afternoon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
