Roys Peak Track
Roys Peak Track is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a challenging but rewarding climb to a spectacular viewpoint above Wanaka. The track winds through golden tussock-covered hills, with the turquoise waters of Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps providing a breathtaking backdrop. It's a must-do for hikers seeking that classic Instagram shot—a ridge-top perch overlooking the lake and mountains.
Highlights & What to See
- The summit ridge: The final section along the ridge offers panoramic views of Lake Wanaka, the Matukituki Valley, and Mount Aspiring/Tititea. The photo spot near the top is iconic.
- Tussock landscapes: The lower slopes are covered in native tussock, which glows golden in the afternoon light, especially in autumn.
- Wildlife encounters: Keep an eye out for native birds like the South Island robin (toutouwai) and the New Zealand falcon (kārearea).
- Lake Wanaka vistas: The track provides ever-changing views of the lake and the town of Wanaka as you ascend.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day for the return hike (approximately 5–7 hours). The track is 16 km return and gains about 1,200 m in elevation. Start early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds, and to catch the best light for photos. The descent is steep, so pace yourself and carry plenty of water and snacks.
