Point Kean Seal Colony, at the northern tip of Kaikōura Peninsula, offers one of New Zealand's most accessible wildlife encounters. Here, you can watch New Zealand fur seals and elephant seals lounging on rocks and beaches, often just metres away. The rugged coastal scenery, with crashing waves and dramatic limestone formations, adds to the raw beauty of the place.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate 1–2 hours for the seal colony and the immediate coastal walk. If you plan to do the full Peninsula Walkway, allow 3–4 hours. Many visitors combine the colony with a whale watch tour in the morning and a seafood lunch in Kaikōura township.
