On New Zealand's West Coast, Paparoa National Park is a wild, untamed landscape where ancient limestone cliffs meet the Tasman Sea. This is a place of dramatic pancake-stacked rock formations, dense native forest, and a rugged coastline pounded by surf. The air smells of salt and damp earth, and the sound of waves echoes through sea-carved caves. It's a must for anyone driving the West Coast, offering short walks that deliver big rewards and a sense of being on the edge of the world.
Highlights & What to See
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks & Blowholes: The star attraction – limestone formations layered like stacks of pancakes, with blowholes that spout seawater at high tide. The easy loop walk takes 20 minutes, but allow longer to watch the surf explode through the rocks.
- Paparoa Track: A 55 km great walk that traverses the park from the Pororari River to the coast. For day-trippers, the first section from the Pororari River car park to the Punakaiki River is a stunning 3-hour return through limestone gorges and nikau palm forest.
- Pororari River Track: A gentle 1-hour walk along a crystal-clear river, shaded by towering limestone cliffs and lush ferns. Perfect for a quick immersion in the park's lush interior.
- Truman Track: A short 15-minute walk to a beautiful pebble beach with sea caves and a waterfall that cascades directly onto the sand at high tide. Great for photography.
- Fox River Caves & Limestone Arch: A 40-minute walk leads to a natural limestone arch and a cave system. Bring a torch to explore the cave's eerie glowworm-lit interior.
Suggested Time to Spend
Paparoa is best as a half-day stop on a West Coast road trip. If you're driving between Greymouth and Westport, allow 2-3 hours to see the Pancake Rocks, do the Truman Track, and take a short river walk. Hikers wanting to tackle the Paparoa Track should plan for 2-3 days. The park is compact, so even a quick visit feels rewarding.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Punakaiki: The small settlement right at the park's edge, with a café, accommodation, and a visitor centre. Stay overnight to catch the blowholes at sunset or sunrise.
- Greymouth: 45 minutes south, this historic gold-mining town offers breweries, the Monteith's brewery tour, and access to the Shantytown heritage park.
- Westport: 50 minutes north, a gateway to the Buller Gorge and the Oparara Basin Arches, with more limestone wonders and the Denniston historic plateau.
- Buller Gorge: A dramatic river canyon with swingbridges, jet boating, and the famous Buller Gorge Swingbridge experience, about 30 minutes east of Westport.
- Charleston: A tiny former gold-rush town 15 minutes north of Punakaiki, known for glowworm caves and the beautiful Nile River walk.
