Oret Beach
Oret Beach is a wild, windswept stretch of golden sand on the Canterbury coast, offering a raw and untamed escape from the inland thermal resorts. Here, the roar of the Pacific Ocean and the scent of salt spray dominate the senses. It's a place for long, solitary walks, beachcombing for driftwood and colourful shells, and watching the dramatic sunsets that paint the sky in hues of orange and pink. The beach is backed by rolling dunes and native scrub, with views stretching to the distant Kaikōura Ranges. It's a favourite spot for locals to walk their dogs, fly kites, or simply sit and listen to the waves.
Highlights & What to See
- Wild Beach Walks: Stroll for miles along the vast, uncrowded shoreline. The beach is particularly stunning at low tide when the sand is firm and the pools reflect the sky.
- Sunset Views: Oret Beach faces west, making it a prime location for watching the sun sink into the ocean. Bring a blanket and a thermos for a memorable evening.
- Birdwatching: Look for oystercatchers, gulls, and the occasional white-fronted tern. The dune system also hosts native plants and insects.
- Surfing & Kiteboarding: When the conditions are right, the beach offers consistent waves and wind. Check locally before heading out, as currents can be strong.
- Picnicking: There are basic picnic tables and a small shelter near the car park. It's a great spot for a simple lunch with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Oret Beach, enough for a relaxing walk and to soak in the scenery. If you're a keen photographer or want to watch the sunset, plan for an evening visit. It's a perfect stop on a day trip from Hanmer Springs, or a short detour when driving between Christchurch and Kaikōura.
