Ohau Point Seal Colony is a raw, unfiltered wildlife spectacle on the Kaikōura Coast, where the Tasman Sea crashes against rocky shores and hundreds of New Zealand fur seals lounge, play, and nurse their pups. Just a short detour off State Highway 1, this easily accessible colony offers front-row seats to one of New Zealand's most endearing natural shows.
Highlights & What to See
- New Zealand Fur Seals (Kekeno) – Watch pups tumbling in rock pools, mothers nursing, and territorial bulls bellowing. Best visited October–January for pupping season.
- Ohau Point Scenic Reserve – A short coastal walk from the carpark leads to a viewing platform overlooking the colony. Stay on the marked track – seals are wild and can move surprisingly fast.
- Seal Pup Nursery – In spring and summer, dozens of fluffy pups gather in sheltered coves. Keep your distance (at least 10 m) and never get between a pup and the sea.
- Dramatic Coastal Views – The rugged limestone cliffs and turquoise water create a stunning backdrop. Perfect for photography, especially in late afternoon light.
- Interpretive Signs – Learn about the seals' life cycle and conservation efforts. The colony is part of the larger Kaikōura marine ecosystem.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for a relaxed visit. The walk from the carpark to the main viewing area is only 5–10 minutes, but you'll likely want to linger watching the seals. Combine with a stop at the Ohau Point Lookout (just north) for panoramic views. If you're driving the Kaikōura coast, this is a 15–20 minute detour that's well worth the pause.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Kean Point Lookout – A short drive south, this spot offers another seal colony and views of the Kaikōura Peninsula.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway – A 3-hour coastal walk with seal colonies, seabirds, and stunning cliff-top views.
