North Canterbury is a ruggedly beautiful region that stretches from the Pacific Coast to the Southern Alps, offering a mix of coastal scenery, rolling vineyards, and alpine adventures. It's a quieter alternative to the more touristy spots, with charming towns like Hanmer Springs and Waipara Valley's wine country providing a perfect base for exploring.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least 3–4 days to explore North Canterbury properly. Base yourself in Hanmer Springs for 2 nights to enjoy the hot pools and nearby walks, then spend a day in Waipara Valley wine tasting and another in Kaikōura for marine wildlife. If you're short on time, a day trip from Christchurch can cover Waipara and Hanmer Springs, but you'll miss the coast.
