Perched high above the Hooker Valley on the slopes of Mount Ollivier, Mueller Hut is one of New Zealand's most iconic backcountry huts, offering a quintessential alpine experience in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The journey to this red-roofed sanctuary is as rewarding as the destination itself, with a steep, rocky trail that climbs through alpine meadows and past boulder fields, culminating in panoramic views of the Southern Alps, the Tasman Glacier, and the glittering turquoise lakes below. This is a place for hikers who crave solitude, dramatic landscapes, and a true sense of mountain adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- The Mueller Hut Route: A challenging but well-marked trail (5-6 hours up) that ascends from the Hooker Valley, passing the Sealy Tarns (a great viewpoint) and scrambling up a rocky ridge to the hut.
- Panoramic Alpine Views: From the hut, soak in 360-degree vistas of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the Hochstetter Icefall, and the vast Tasman Glacier – especially stunning at sunrise and sunset.
- Sunset & Stargazing: Spend the night to watch the alpenglow on the peaks and, on clear nights, an incredible display of stars in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
- Alpine Flora & Fauna: In summer, the trail is dotted with mountain daisies and buttercups; keep an eye out for kea (alpine parrots) and the elusive rock wren.
- Sealy Tarns: A worthwhile stop on the way up, these tarns mirror the surrounding peaks on calm days.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors stay one night at Mueller Hut, which allows time for a relaxed ascent, sunset photography, and a morning descent. The hike up takes 5–6 hours (including breaks), and the descent about 3–4 hours. If you're a fast hiker, a very long day trip is possible but not recommended – the hut experience is the highlight. Book the hut in advance through the Department of Conservation, as it's extremely popular.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Tasman Glacier & Lake: Accessible via a short walk or kayak tour, this is the largest glacier in New Zealand, with icebergs floating in the terminal lake.
- Lake Pukaki: The stunning turquoise lake on the drive to Mount Cook, with viewpoints and the Mount Cook Alpine Salmon shop.
- Twizel: A nearby town with amenities, and the departure point for Tasman Glacier heli-hikes and other adventures.
