Mt Isobel Track
Rising steeply from the thermal village of Hanmer Springs, Mt Isobel Track is a classic day hike that rewards effort with panoramic views of the alpine foothills and the checkerboard farmlands of North Canterbury. This is a proper workout—switchbacks through beech forest give way to a tussocky ridge where the wind whips and the Southern Alps seem close enough to touch. The track is well-formed and marked, but bring sturdy boots, layers, and plenty of water; the summit feels like a genuine backcountry achievement.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit views – From the 1,424 m peak, gaze across the Hanmer Basin to the Seaward Kaikōura Range and, on clear days, the Pacific Ocean.
- Beech forest section – The lower slopes are cloaked in mountain beech, with mossy trunks and birdlife including tomtits and bellbirds.
- Subalpine herb fields – Above the treeline, look for mountain daisies, snow tussocks, and the occasional kea.
- Jollies Pass Road end – A shorter option: start from the Jollies Pass car park to cut a few kilometres off the climb.
- Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools – Soak tired legs in the hot pools after the descent (just a five-minute drive from the trailhead).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers need 5–6 hours return for the full track from the Hanmer Springs township trailhead. Start early to avoid afternoon heat and afternoon cloud build-up; the climb is relentless and you’ll want clear views at the top. If you’re short on time or energy, the Jollies Pass option cuts the round trip to about 3–4 hours. This is a half-day commitment best paired with an afternoon soak or a lazy lunch in town.
