Mt Iso Bel
Mt Iso Bel is a classic Hanmer Springs day walk, rising steeply from the forested valley floor to open tussock tops with commanding views of the Hanmer Basin, the Seaward Kaikōura Range, and the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps. This 4–5 hour return tramp is a favourite among locals and visitors alike for its rewarding summit panorama and the sense of isolation you get just a short drive from the village.
Highlights & What to See
- Conical Hill Track – the first section winds through red beech forest alive with birdlife, including bellbirds and fantails.
- Summit ridge – once above the treeline, the track crosses open tussock slopes with wildflowers in summer and spectacular autumn colours.
- 360° views – from the top you can see the Hanmer Plains, the alpine peaks of the Amuri Range, and on clear days the Kaikōura Peninsula.
- Wildlife spotting – keep an eye out for hawks circling overhead and the occasional chamois on the higher slopes.
- Historic gold mining remnants – along the lower sections you may notice old water races and diggings from the 1860s gold rush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day for the return walk: about 1–1.5 hours up to the saddle, then another 30–45 minutes to the summit. The descent takes roughly 1.5 hours. Combined with a picnic on the summit and a soak in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa afterwards, it makes a perfect full-day outing from Hanmer Springs village.
