Mt Isabel, rising to 1489 metres in the Hanmer Forest Park, is a rewarding backcountry tramp for those seeking solitude and sweeping views. This challenging day hike takes you through beech forest, subalpine scrub, and across open tops, culminating in panoramic vistas of the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Hanmer Basin, and on clear days, the Pacific Ocean.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan a full day (7–9 hours return) for the 16 km return hike from the end of Jollies Pass Road. Most fit trampers can summit and return in a day, but consider an overnight stay at the hut to break up the climb and enjoy sunset from the tops. Start early to avoid afternoon winds and allow time for photo stops.
