Mount Rydell

Mount Rydell is a rugged, bush-clad peak rising above the Hanmer Springs basin, offering one of the best short-but-steep day hikes in the region. The reward at the top is a panoramic sweep across the sea of green that is the Hanmer Forest Park, with the distant Southern Alps and Kaikōura Ranges on the horizon. This is a classic Kiwi tramping experience — think beech forest, bird song, and a satisfyingly aerobic climb that makes the summit feel well earned.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a half-day (3–4 hours return) for the Mount Rydell summit track. The climb is steep in sections, so pace yourself and carry plenty of water. Most people start in the morning to catch the best light and avoid afternoon heat. If you're short on time, even a walk partway into the beech forest is rewarding — you can turn back whenever you like.
