Rising dramatically above the Hanmer Basin, Mount Roland is a striking limestone peak that rewards hikers with panoramic views over the surrounding alpine landscape. This is a classic Canterbury backcountry experience, offering a challenging but achievable day walk through tussock grasslands and rocky ridgelines, with the chance to spot native falcons and kea.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most walkers need 4–6 hours return for the summit climb, including breaks. Start early to avoid afternoon winds and give yourself time to soak in the views. If you're less experienced or want a gentler outing, you can explore the lower slopes and Jollies Pass in 2–3 hours. Combine with a soak in the Hanmer Springs thermal pools afterwards for the perfect day.
