Perched on the eastern edge of the Southern Alps, Mount Lyford Ski Area is a hidden gem that offers uncrowded slopes and stunning views over the Pacific Ocean. This family-friendly club field has a genuine Kiwi vibe, with a mix of open bowls, groomed runs, and a terrain park. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll find something to love on its 20-odd trails.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic Ocean Views: Ski with a backdrop of the Kaikōura Ranges and the blue Pacific – a sight you won't get at most other South Island fields.
- Terrain for All Levels: From gentle learners' slopes to challenging black diamond runs like the aptly named 'Shocker' – 60% intermediate, 30% advanced, 10% beginner.
- Club Field Charm: The lodge serves hearty home-cooked meals and mulled wine; Sunday BBQ on the deck is a local tradition.
- Off-Piste Opportunities: For experienced skiers, the backcountry access (with a guide) leads to untracked powder in the Lyford Range.
- Nearby Hanmer Springs: After a day on the slopes, soak tired muscles in the famous thermal pools just 25 minutes away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a full day trip from Hanmer Springs. The drive takes about 25 minutes (last 6 km on a gravel road, chains may be required). Arrive early to secure parking and enjoy first tracks. If you're keen, a half-day is enough to sample the main runs, but a full day lets you explore the off-piste and relax at the lodge. The season runs roughly July to October, conditions permitting.
