Mount Isobel Walk is a classic Hanmer Springs tramp that rewards hikers with sweeping views over the alpine landscape. The trail climbs steadily through beech forest and tussock slopes to the summit, where you can see the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Hanmer Basin, and on clear days, the Pacific Ocean. It's a challenging but achievable day walk for anyone with reasonable fitness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day (6–8 hours return) for the Mount Isobel Walk. Start early to avoid afternoon winds and cloud buildup, and carry plenty of water and sun protection. The track is steep in places, so pace yourself and take breaks to enjoy the changing scenery. Many hikers combine this walk with a soak in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools afterward—a perfect reward.
