Rising to 1,450 metres above the Hanmer Basin, Mount Isabel is the quintessential Hanmer Springs day-hike – a steady, rewarding climb that delivers panoramic views over the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Canterbury Plains, and on a clear day, as far as the Pacific Ocean. The track begins from the end of Jollies Pass Road, winding through mountain beech forest before opening onto tussock-clad slopes. It’s a classic New Zealand alpine experience without the need for technical gear, making it a favourite for fit walkers and families with older children.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full half-day for the return trip: the track is 6.5 km each way and takes most people 4–5 hours return, including time at the top for photos and a picnic. Start early in summer to avoid the midday heat and afternoon nor’westers; in winter, check snow conditions and carry crampons if icy. The climb is steady but not steep, with only a few short steeper sections near the summit.
