Rising to 1,450 metres above the Hanmer Basin, Mount Isabel is the quintessential Hanmer Springs day-hike – a steady, rewarding climb that delivers panoramic views over the Seaward Kaikōura Range, the Canterbury Plains, and on a clear day, as far as the Pacific Ocean. The track begins from the end of Jollies Pass Road, winding through mountain beech forest before opening onto tussock-clad slopes. It’s a classic New Zealand alpine experience without the need for technical gear, making it a favourite for fit walkers and families with older children.
Highlights & What to See
- The summit panorama – a 360° sweep of the Hanmer Basin, the Clarence River valley, and the snowy peaks of the Kaikōura Ranges.
- Alpine flora – in summer, the upper slopes are dotted with mountain daisies, hebes, and the delicate Mt Cook lily (giant buttercup).
- Birdlife – keep an eye out for kea (mountain parrots) near the top, and listen for the bellbirds and tomtits in the beech forest.
- Jollies Pass history – the track follows part of an old gold-miners’ route; interpretive signs tell the story of the 1860s rush.
- Sunset or sunrise climb – for photographers, the soft light from the summit is unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full half-day for the return trip: the track is 6.5 km each way and takes most people 4–5 hours return, including time at the top for photos and a picnic. Start early in summer to avoid the midday heat and afternoon nor’westers; in winter, check snow conditions and carry crampons if icy. The climb is steady but not steep, with only a few short steeper sections near the summit.
