Molesworth Recreation Reserve is New Zealand's largest farm, a vast and remote high-country station in the upper South Island, stretching over 180,000 hectares of rugged mountains, tussock grasslands, and braided rivers. This is a place where you can truly escape the crowds and immerse yourself in raw, untamed nature. The reserve is only open to the public during the summer months (typically December to April), and access is via a scenic gravel road that winds through breathtaking landscapes. It's a paradise for hikers, cyclists, and anyone seeking solitude and a sense of adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- The Molesworth Tour: A self-drive or guided tour along the Molesworth Road (State Highway 63 to Acheron Road) offers stunning views of the Inland Kaikōura Range, the Clarence River, and historic homesteads like the Molesworth Cob Cottage.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for native birds like the New Zealand falcon (kārearea) and the kea, as well as wild horses and deer that roam the reserve.
- Walking and Hiking: Several short walks, such as the Acheron River Walk and the Top Valley Track, provide easy access to the dramatic scenery. For experienced trampers, the St James Walkway crosses part of the reserve.
- Mountain Biking: The remote gravel roads and 4WD tracks offer challenging rides for mountain bikers seeking a true backcountry experience.
- Historic Sites: Visit the Molesworth Cob Cottage (built in the 1860s) and other heritage sites that tell the story of early high-country farming.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day for a self-drive tour from Hanmer Springs, which allows time for stops, short walks, and picnics. If you're keen on longer hikes or mountain biking, consider an overnight stay at the basic DOC campsites (no facilities) within the reserve. The drive itself takes about 3–4 hours one way from Hanmer Springs to the northern end at St Arnaud, but you'll want to allow extra time for photo stops and exploring.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
