Middlemarch is a sleepy rural settlement in the Strath-Taieri region of Otago, best known as the starting point for the Otago Central Rail Trail. With a population of just a few hundred, it offers a genuine slice of small-town New Zealand life, surrounded by rolling hills and dramatic rock formations.
Highlights & What to See
- Otago Central Rail Trail – Cycle or hike this 150-km trail from Middlemarch to Clyde, passing through historic tunnels, viaducts, and old gold-mining towns. Hire bikes at the trailhead.
- Taieri River Gorge – Drive or cycle along the river, marveling at the steep cliffs and unique rock formations like the Taieri Mouth and Outram Glen.
- Sutton Salt Lake – A short drive away, New Zealand's only inland salt lake, with a walking track offering views of the stark landscape and birdlife.
- Middlemarch Museum – Housed in the old railway station, this small museum tells the story of the rail trail and local farming history.
- Local produce – Stop at the Middlemarch Cafe for homemade pies and coffee, or visit the weekend farmers' market for fresh fruit and preserves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors pass through Middlemarch in a day, either starting or ending a Rail Trail ride. If you're cycling the full trail, budget 3–5 days; for a short visit, 2–3 hours is enough to explore the museum, grab a bite, and take a short walk along the trail. To fully appreciate the scenery, consider an overnight stay at a local B&B.
