Middlemarch is a sleepy rural settlement in the Strath-Taieri region of Otago, best known as the starting point for the Otago Central Rail Trail. With a population of just a few hundred, it offers a genuine slice of small-town New Zealand life, surrounded by rolling hills and dramatic rock formations.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors pass through Middlemarch in a day, either starting or ending a Rail Trail ride. If you're cycling the full trail, budget 3–5 days; for a short visit, 2–3 hours is enough to explore the museum, grab a bite, and take a short walk along the trail. To fully appreciate the scenery, consider an overnight stay at a local B&B.
