Nestled in a remote valley of the Southern Lakes region, Mavora Lakes (North Mavora and South Mavora) offer a pristine wilderness experience that feels a world away from the crowds. These stunning turquoise lakes, set against a backdrop of rugged mountains and ancient beech forests, are a haven for hikers, anglers, and anyone seeking solitude in nature. The drive in on gravel roads is an adventure in itself, rewarding you with jaw-dropping scenery and a sense of discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- North Mavora Lake – The larger and more accessible lake, with a well-maintained campground and walking tracks along its shores. The views of the Humboldt Mountains are unforgettable.
- South Mavora Lake – A more secluded sibling, reachable via a short walk or 4WD track. Its deep blue waters and quiet beaches feel like your own private paradise.
- Mavora Lakes Walkway – A 3–4 hour return hike along the eastern shore of North Mavora, offering panoramic lake and mountain vistas. Perfect for a half-day tramp.
- Fly Fishing – The lakes and surrounding rivers are renowned for brown and rainbow trout. Even if you don't fish, watching the glassy surface break with a rise is magical.
- Stargazing – As part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve (and beyond), the night skies here are spectacular. On a clear night, the Milky Way arches overhead like a celestial river.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring Mavora Lakes, which allows time for a leisurely hike, a picnic by the water, and some fishing or photography. If you're camping, stay one or two nights to fully absorb the tranquility. The lakes are a popular stop on a Te Anau–Queenstown road trip, but they deserve at least a half-day detour. Note that the gravel access road (Mavora Lakes Road) is rough in places; allow 45–60 minutes from the nearest sealed road.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
