Most visitors spend a full day exploring Mavora Lakes, which allows time for a leisurely hike, a picnic by the water, and some fishing or photography. If you're camping, stay one or two nights to fully absorb the tranquility. The lakes are a popular stop on a Te Anau–Queenstown road trip, but they deserve at least a half-day detour. Note that the gravel access road (Mavora Lakes Road) is rough in places; allow 45–60 minutes from the nearest sealed road.

• Te Anau – Gateway to Fiordland National Park and the Milford Track, about 1.5 hours' drive south.
• Queenstown – The adventure capital, 2 hours east via the scenic Crown Range or Kawarau Gorge.
• Fiordland National Park – World-famous for Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and the Kepler Track. Combine Mavora Lakes with a Fiordland itinerary.
• Mossburn – A small town known as the deer capital, with a quirky deer museum and local pubs. A good pit stop for supplies.
