Mangamaunu Beach is a wild, black-sand stretch on the Kaikōura Coast, framed by dramatic mountains and the roar of the Pacific. This is a place for storm-watching, beachcombing, and feeling the raw power of nature. It's less crowded than Kaikōura's main beaches, offering a more solitary experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Black Sand & Surf: The dark sand, rich in minerals, contrasts with the turquoise water. It's a popular spot for experienced surfers when the swell is up.
- Seal Spotting: New Zealand fur seals often haul out on the rocks at the southern end. Keep a respectful distance.
- Coastal Walking: The beach is part of the Kaikōura Coast Track; a short walk north leads to sweeping views of the Seaward Kaikōura Range.
- Birdlife: Look for oystercatchers, gulls, and sometimes the rare black-fronted tern.
- Sunset Views: The beach faces west, so it's a prime spot for watching the sun sink behind the mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for a relaxed stroll and photo stop. If you're keen on surfing or a longer walk, plan for half a day. The beach is easily visited as a quick detour off State Highway 1 between Kaikōura and Hanmer Springs.
