Lewis Pass
Lewis Pass is one of New Zealand’s most dramatic alpine crossings, linking Canterbury’s rolling foothills with the wild West Coast. The road snakes through ancient beech forests, past braided rivers and sheer rock bluffs, with the Southern Alps as a constant backdrop. This is a journey for those who love the road less travelled – expect few cars, endless photo stops, and a palpable sense of remoteness.
Highlights & What to See
- Marble Hill picnic area – a serene spot with short trails through limestone outcrops and mossy forest.
- St James Walkway – a multi-day tramp from the pass, but even a day walk gives a taste of the alpine wilderness.
- Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve – stop for a short loop through ancient beech forest draped in moss and lichen.
- Boyle River – a braided river perfect for a leg-stretch and photography, especially in late afternoon light.
- Lookout points – several unmarked pull-offs offer sweeping views of the mountain ranges and the road snaking below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lewis Pass is a crossing, not a destination – most travellers drive it in 1–2 hours, but allow at least half a day if you want to stop for walks and picnics. It’s best done as part of a day trip from Hanmer Springs (45 minutes east) or as a scenic leg between Canterbury and the West Coast. The road is narrow and winding in places, so take your time and enjoy the journey.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hanmer Springs – the closest town, with thermal pools, hiking, and mountain biking.
- Maruia Springs – a small hot springs resort just west of the pass, ideal for a soak after the drive.
- Reefton – a historic gold-mining town on the West Coast side, with charming heritage buildings.
- Murchison – a riverside town known for whitewater rafting and the nearby Buller Gorge.
- Arthur's Pass National Park – another spectacular alpine crossing further south, with more tramping and wildlife.
