Lake Manapouri, in Fiordland National Park, is a pristine wilderness lake often called the 'Pearl of the South Island'. Its deep, dark waters and forested islands create a serene setting for kayaking, cruises, and hiking. The lake is the gateway to Doubtful Sound, offering an off-the-beaten-path experience away from Milford Sound's crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one full day for a Doubtful Sound cruise, but if you're short on time, a half-day lake cruise and walkway are rewarding. For kayakers or hikers, two days allow for a relaxed pace. Manapouri is often visited as a day trip from Te Anau (20 minutes away), but overnighting lets you enjoy the evening tranquility.
