Kea Point Walk is a short, family-friendly trail in Hanmer Springs that delivers big rewards for minimal effort. The easy 20-minute stroll through native beech forest culminates in a viewing platform with outstanding views of the Hanmer Basin and surrounding mountains. It’s an ideal leg-stretcher after soaking in the thermal pools or a quick nature fix if you’re short on time.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic views from the platform across the Hanmer Basin to the Seaward Kaikōura Range – especially stunning in late afternoon light.
- Interpretive signs along the trail explain the local flora, fauna, and the story of the kea (alpine parrot) that gives the walk its name.
- Birdlife: keep an eye out for kererū (wood pigeon), tomtits, and if you’re lucky, a kea near the car park.
- Easy access: the track is well-graded and suitable for all fitness levels, including families with young children.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes return, including time to linger at the viewpoint. It’s a perfect quick outing before or after a spa session, or as a warm-up for longer hikes in the area. You could easily slot it into a half-day exploring Hanmer Springs.
