Few wildlife encounters rival the thrill of watching a sperm whale surface and dive off Kaikoura’s coast, where the deep Hikurangi Trench meets the shore, funnelling nutrient-rich waters that sustain an extraordinary marine ecosystem. This is one of New Zealand’s most iconic wildlife experiences, offering year-round sightings of giant sperm whales, as well as dusky dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, and migrating humpbacks and orcas in season. The town of Kaikoura itself, framed by the Seaward Kaikoura Range and the Pacific Ocean, is a laid-back base with a strong Māori heritage and a growing food scene built around fresh crayfish.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least a full day (overnight recommended) to take in a whale watch tour (3–4 hours) and explore the peninsula walk. If you’re driving the coastal route between Christchurch and Picton, an overnight stay allows for a relaxed pace and a sunset seal-viewing session.
