Just a short drive south of Kaikōura township, the Kaikōura Fur Seal Colony offers an unforgettable wildlife encounter against a dramatic coastal backdrop. Hundreds of New Zealand fur seals (kekeno) lounge on rocky platforms and in tidal pools, their playful antics and barking calls filling the air. The raw power of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the peninsula adds to the spectacle, making this a must-stop for nature lovers and photographers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours to explore the colony and the immediate coastal area. If you plan to walk the full Peninsula Walkway, set aside at least half a day. Many visitors combine the colony with a whale-watching tour (3–4 hours) or a dolphin encounter for a full day of marine wildlife.
