Jollies Pass is a rugged gravel road that climbs over the Hanmer Range, offering a thrilling backcountry drive with sweeping views of the Amuri Basin and the distant Southern Alps. This historic route, once used by Māori and early European settlers, now serves as a gateway to the Molesworth Recreation Reserve, New Zealand's largest working farm. The pass is named after John Jollie, a local runholder, and the drive is an adventure in itself—expect steep gradients, loose surfaces, and spectacular isolation.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least half a day to drive Jollies Pass and explore the southern end of Molesworth. The road itself takes about 30 minutes each way, but you'll want to stop at viewpoints. Combine it with a soak at Hanmer Springs for a full day trip. The pass is best driven from November to April (road conditions can be tricky in winter—always check the DOC website).
