Jollies Pass Walk
Jollies Pass Walk is a rewarding day hike in the Hanmer Springs area, offering sweeping views of the alpine landscape without the crowds of more famous tracks. The trail climbs steadily through beech forest and tussock grasslands to a saddle that once served as a route for gold miners and Māori traveling between the east coast and the inland valleys. On a clear day, the panorama from the top stretches across the Seaward Kaikōura Range and the Molesworth Station, New Zealand's largest farm.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Jollies Pass: Walk the same route used by 19th-century gold seekers and experience the sense of discovery that comes from following an old pack track.
- Panoramic Summit Views: From the saddle, gaze over the Hanmer Basin, the alpine peaks of the Kaikōuras, and the vast high-country stations beyond.
- Beech Forest & Alpine Meadows: The lower section winds through dense red and silver beech forest, then opens into tussock and subalpine herbs as you gain elevation.
- Birdlife: Listen for the call of the bellbird/korimako and the inquisitive tomtit/miromiro flitting among the branches.
- Seasonal Wildflowers: In late spring and summer, the track is dotted with mountain daisies, gentians, and other alpine blooms.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the return journey in 3–4 hours, covering about 8 km (5 miles) with a moderate climb of 400 metres (1,300 feet). Start early in the morning to avoid afternoon heat in summer or to catch the best light for photography. If you're short on time, you can still enjoy the lower forest section in 1–2 hours. The track is well-formed but can be muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
