Jackson Bay is a remote coastal settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Southern Alps meet the Tasman Sea. It's the end of the road – literally, as State Highway 6 terminates here – offering a sense of isolation and raw natural beauty. The bay is known for its sweeping black sand beach, dramatic sea stacks, and a small fishing community that feels worlds away from the tourist crowds. The journey here, winding through temperate rainforest and past the dramatic Haast Pass, is an adventure in itself.
Highlights & What to See
- Jackson Bay Beach: Stroll along the dark sand and watch waves crash against offshore rocks. Keep an eye out for Hector's dolphins and fur seals.
- Fishing Wharf: Watch local fishermen bring in the catch of the day – the bay is famous for its whitebait, blue cod, and crayfish.
- Okuru River Mouth: A short walk from the bay, this spot is perfect for birdwatching and seeing the river meet the sea.
- Haast Pass Scenic Drive: The approach to Jackson Bay is a highlight in itself, with waterfalls, lush rainforest, and viewpoints like Thunder Creek Falls.
- Ship Creek: A 20-minute drive north, this coastal walk takes you through dunelands and a kahikatea swamp forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Jackson Bay, enough to walk the beach, explore the wharf, and enjoy the views. If you're a keen photographer or want to fish, allow half a day. The drive from Haast takes about 30 minutes, so it's easy to combine with other West Coast attractions in a day trip.
