Rising abruptly from the Canterbury plains, the Inland Kaikoura Range offers some of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine scenery without the crowds of the more famous Southern Alps. This rugged, less-trammelled spine of peaks is a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and anyone craving raw, untamed nature. The range's proximity to Hanmer Springs makes it an easy day trip, yet its trails feel a world away from the thermal pools and tourist bustle.
Highlights & What to See
- Mt Lyford – a classic alpine hike with panoramic views over the Pacific and the seaward Kaikoura Range; in winter, the small ski field offers uncrowded slopes.
- St James Walkway – a multi-day tramp through beech forest, tussock tops, and river valleys, with chances to spot kea and chamois. The section near the range is particularly spectacular.
- Island Hills Station – a working high-country station that offers guided horse treks into the backcountry, giving you an authentic taste of Kiwi station life.
- Hanmer Springs Forest – the lower slopes are laced with mountain-bike trails (including the popular Dog Stream track) and short walks to waterfalls like Dog Stream Waterfall.
- Alpine wildlife – keep an eye out for the inquisitive kea (alpine parrot) and, if you're lucky, the rare rock wren.
Suggested Time to Spend
Base yourself in Hanmer Springs for at least two nights to allow a full day for a major hike (e.g., Mt Lyford or a section of the St James Walkway) and a second day for shorter walks or mountain biking. If you're short on time, a half-day drive through the range with short stops at viewpoints and a walk to a waterfall is still rewarding. The range is best visited from late spring to early autumn (November–April); winter brings snow and limited access to higher trails.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
