Hinewai Reserve is a remarkable conservation success story on Banks Peninsula, a 40-minute drive from Hanmer Springs. This 1,200-hectare private nature reserve showcases New Zealand's native forest regeneration, where predator control and ecological restoration have allowed native birds and plants to thrive. Walking its network of trails feels like stepping into a pre-human Aotearoa, with towering tree ferns, ancient rimu, and the haunting call of bellbirds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least half a day, ideally 4–5 hours, to fully appreciate the reserve. A guided walk typically lasts 2–3 hours, leaving time to explore a few trails on your own. Combine with a morning visit to Hanmer Springs for a soak or a picnic lunch in the reserve. The reserve is open daily but guided walks are by arrangement — check ahead for availability.
