Winding through a patchwork of beech forest, river flats, and thermal springs, the Hanmer Springs Walkway is the best introduction to this alpine playground. The easy, well-maintained trail follows the forested banks of the Waiau Uwha River, offering glimpses of the surrounding mountains and the historic Hanmer Springs village. It's a favourite for walkers, runners, and cyclists, and the gentle terrain makes it accessible for families and casual strollers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours to complete the loop at a leisurely pace, or just 45 minutes if you're walking a shorter section. It's an ideal half-day activity when paired with a visit to the thermal pools or a picnic by the river. The walkway is flat and well-graded, so you can easily fit it into a morning or afternoon.
