Hanmer Springs might be best known for its thermal pools, but this alpine village in North Canterbury is a goldmine of family-friendly adventures. From gentle nature walks and mountain biking trails to mini-golf and a treetop walkway, there's enough to keep kids (and parents) entertained for days. The town's compact size and laid-back vibe make it easy to explore on foot or by bike, and the surrounding forest and river provide a stunning natural playground.
Highlights & What to See
- Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa – The centrepiece of the village, with a huge heated outdoor pool, water slides, and a lazy river. Kids love the Super Bowl and the Hydro Slide, while parents can sneak off to the adult-only sulphur pools.
- Hanmer Forest Park – A network of easy walking and cycling trails through towering redwoods and Douglas firs. The Waterfall Track is a short, rewarding walk that ends at a pretty cascade.
- Conical Hill Walk – A gentle, family-friendly climb (about 1.5 hours return) that offers panoramic views of the village and surrounding mountains. Perfect for a picnic at the top.
- Hanmer Springs Adventure Centre – Hire bikes, book a guided mountain bike tour, or try your hand at archery and mini-golf. The centre also offers quad bike tours for older kids.
- Tree Adventures Hanmer Springs – A high-ropes course set among the forest canopy, with different levels of difficulty for ages 4 and up. A great way to burn off energy.
- Hanmer Springs Skate Park – A modern skate park that's popular with local kids and visitors alike. Bring your scooters, skateboards, or bikes.
- Woodbank Park Playground – A large, modern playground with swings, slides, and a flying fox. It's right next to the thermal pools, so it's easy to combine.
Suggested Time to Spend
Families should plan at least two full days to enjoy the thermal pools and a couple of outdoor activities. One day can be dedicated to the pools and a short forest walk, while a second day allows for a longer hike or bike ride and the treetop adventure. If you're passing through on a road trip, a half-day stop is enough for a quick dip and a stroll through the village.
