Haast is a small settlement on the rugged West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Haast River meets the Tasman Sea. It's the gateway to the dramatic landscapes of South Westland and a crucial stop on the journey between Wanaka and the glaciers. The area is renowned for its untamed wilderness, ancient rainforests, and powerful rivers, offering a raw and remote experience that feels a world away from civilisation.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through Haast in a day, using it as a lunch or fuel stop while driving the Haast Pass. To fully appreciate the area, plan for a half-day to explore the short walks and viewpoints. If you're keen on jet boating or fishing, an overnight stay allows for a more relaxed pace. The drive from Wanaka to Haast takes about 1.5 hours, and from Haast to Fox Glacier about 1 hour, so it's easy to incorporate as a scenic leg of a larger West Coast itinerary.
